NHL's OLN debut doubles usual nightly audience

The OLN hockey era got off to a decent if not outstanding start Wednesday night. OLN (formerly Outdoor Life Network) broadcast its first game, the New York Rangers against the Philadelphia Flyers, and averaged 353,000 viewers between 7:30 and 10:30 p.m. While that fell well short of ESPN's last opening-night telecast in October 2003, which averaged 476,000 viewers, it wasn't bad considering that OLN is available in 64 million households while ESPN reaches about 90 million. ESPN dropped coverage of the NHL after last season’s lockout. The hockey audience was certainly an improvement over OLN's usual ratings. The 353,000 viewers more than doubled OLN's average Wednesday night audience of 125,089 viewers this year. And OLN averaged 276,869 viewers from 7-11 p.m., which included pre- and post-game shows, more than four times last year's 57,883.
